Dr Andrew Charles, technical director of BRE's Centre for Ground Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering for his 'distin- guished appli- cation of geo- technical engineering to understanding the behaviour of embankment dams, enhancing the method of assessment and safety of old embankment dams.
Ken Marsh, managing director of Exploration Associates at the time of its takeover by Mowlem's Environmental Services Group in 1997, has joined Ian Farmer Associates as managing director. David Wilshaw has been appointed director and manager of the new north west office.
Philip Staten has been appointed as technical director at Maccaferri. He heads up the UK design team and is a member of the Maccaferri International Technical Com- mittee. Tom Edwards is promoted to divisional director (Northern UK and Ireland).

BGS has commissioned a new web site which will include an interactive version of the BGS Directory. The contract was won by Geocentrix (www.geocentrix. co.uk) which is working to get the site ready for the first BGS meeting of the 1999/2000 committee later this month.
