Dr Richard Jardine, reader in soil mechanics at Imperial College, London, has won a silver medal for achievement from the Royal Academy of Engineering for his outstanding contribution to UK engineering and its commercial exploitation. Since the mid-1980s, he has led a team studying the load carrying capacity of piled foundations for offshore oil platforms.

Former head of Hong Kong's Geotechnical Engineering Office, Andrew Malone, has been awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in the 1998 Honours List of the SAR. Malone is now honorary professor at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Hong Kong.

Peter Head, chief executive of Maunsell Europe, has been appointed vice president of CIRIA for one year. His role involves the provision of advice and support to the CIRIA council.

Dr George Milligan has been appointed a director of Geotechnical Consulting Group.

Norwest Holst Engineering has restructured its operations into two divisions. The geoenvironmental division will include ground investigation, contaminated land assessment and chemical testing with John Swales as director. Dave Donovan is director of the foundations division which will include piling, vibro, grouting and mini-piling.

David Roche, previously environmental director with WSP and Frank Graham, has established an Exeter-based consultancy, David Roche GeoConsulting.

Mark Wedgbury has left geoenvironmental consultant Weeks Technical Services to take over geotechnical and geoenvironmental drilling contractor Blue Diamond Drilling.

Dr Cliff Warman has joined environmental consultant Entec UK as principal consultant in the contaminated land team. He will support the company's brownfield site regeneration service, launched last year.

David Wilshaw has joined Earth Science Partnership as director of its northern office in Deeside.
