Dr Richard Jardine, reader in soil mechanics at Imperial College, London, has won a silver medal for achievement from the Royal Academy of Engineering for his outstanding contribution to UK engineering and its commercial exploitation. Since the mid-1980s, he has led a team studying the load carrying capacity of piled foundations for offshore oil platforms.
Former head of Hong Kong's Geotechnical Engineering Office, Andrew Malone, has been awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star in the 1998 Honours List of the SAR. Malone is now honorary professor at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Hong Kong.
