An overwhelming 83% of members voted in favour of redefining the associate grade of membership to embrace professionals from other disciplines working in the civil engineering industry.

The term 'associate' member will now refer to the role of individuals 'associated' with civil engineering such as hydrologists, ecologists, geologists and transport planners. The associate member grade previously applied to civil engineers without degrees.

Corporate members also approved changes to the by-laws and ICE disciplinary regulations to allow the chairman of the disciplinary board to order the immediate, temporary suspension of a member who has been convicted of a serious criminal offence.

The suspension will usually last no longer than three months.

Corporate members voted in favour of bringing forward the deadline for paying annual ICE subscriptions from 30 June to 30 April.

The amendments to the bylaws will now be forwarded to the Privy Council.
