Amateur dramatics

So it is time to increase subscriptions again (NCE last week). Council has approved it, the members will be voting on it, and in return for the increase we shall get an Institution which is a 'professional and highly competent organisation' instead of one run by 'well meaning amateurs'.

This is a travesty of the truth and an insult to many members who in the past have given their time unstintingly for the good of the Institution. Those members applied the same standards of expertise in their voluntary work for the ICE as they did in their day jobs, and it is quite wrong to suggest otherwise.

The devolution of responsibility to the regions is proving to be successful, but there would be nothing for the new regional management to build on if it were not for the dedication of the 'well meaning amateurs' who kept the local groups going and did so much to encourage younger members to participate.

I am all for progress but let us not demean those who gave their time and energy freely, whether at local level or at Great George Street, to ensure our Institution's survival.
