Albert's memorial

The Kaiser Chiefs, to whom Gordon Masterton refers, are not the only band to have sung about a civil engineer. Perhaps he forgets Albert Hammond's Free Electric Band in which his parents '. . . used to sit and speculate about their son's career: a lawyer or a doctor or a civil engineer'.

The implied glamour of the profession in that lyric used to bring a wry smile to my face when I was scrabbling around the bottom of a muddy hole setting out at the start of my career.

David Close, technical director, Jacobs Babtie, Unit H1, Eden Office Park, 61 Macrae Road, Ham Green BS20 0DD
