Air travel antithesis of sustainability

It's good to see (NCE 7 February) that we have 'no excuse to ignore sustainability'.

But that doesn't mean kidding ourselves that air travel is in any way sustainable.

It is based entirely on the use of fossil fuels, destroys ozone, is noisy and anti-social. This won't change in principle until we come up with some new technology, or learn to do without it. Tinkering at the margins to mitigate environmental effects isn't the same as sustainability.
