Aggregate Industries will become the sole provider of all the aggregate materials including sand, gravel, crushed stone and the recycled concrete needed for the construction of Olympic venues and infrastructure.
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) awarded the contract to Aggregate Industries for its emphasis on recycled content and its aim to deliver 99% of materials by sustainable transport methods. The firm beat shortlisted firms including CEMEX, Hanson, Lafarge and Tarmac.
"Aggregate Industries exceeded the ODA targets and are able to commit to providing over 70% of the materials needed as recycled aggregates and to transport 99% of materials by water or rail," said ODA head of sustainability Dan Epstein.
"This is unprecedented for a project of the size, scale and complexity."
Approximately 74% of the aggregate materials will be transported by rail and 25% by water, with only 1% transported by road for specialist materials which do not have established rail and water links.
Aggregate Industries predicts that its will use four 120 tonne barges and five 350 tonne barges to provide a typical daily delivery by water of between 500-1000 tonnes.
Delivery of freight by water to London's Olympic Park has been made possible by the construction of the £18.9M Prescott Lock south of the construction site.
The structure comprises a 62m x 8m lock, two flood control gates and a fish pass. Together these will keep the river water at one level, ensuring the rivers running through the Olympic Park, previously subject to the tidal ebb and flow of the Thames, are navigable.
