Agency unveils 10-year management plan for key routes

A RADICAL overhaul of the nation's trunk road network management was this week unveiled by the Highways Agency.

Following the successful trials of the new 'whole route' management plan - run over the past year on the M62, the A1 from Gateshead to the Scottish border and the A14 in Suffolk - 70 further route management strategies will be introduced in the summer.

The plan will see the Agency's network divided into key routes. For each, a 10-year management strategy will be developed for the routes in consultation with local stakeholders and residents. These will cover maintenance, the environment, integrated transport, congestion, safety and accessibility.

Consultants will be commissioned to manage and assess the consultation and investigate solutions. Performance of the routes will be assessed against performance indicators and benchmarked against each other.

Agency network strategy team leader David Avery said the full plan would be introduced across the core network in four phases over the next 30 months. The first phase, comprising 17 route management strategies will be launched in July.

Avery said: 'We will ask people how the route is performing and what the solutions are. We will then hold workshops with the public and come up with a draft strategy plan for the route over a 10- year period.'

Strategies to be launched in the first tranche include the A12 from the M25 to Ipswich, M25 to Folkestone, parts of the A1 and parts of the M6.
