ACE to take in councils

THE ASSOCIATION of Consulting Engineers is to widen its membership to include local authority consultants following a unanimous yes vote at its annual general meeting on Friday.

The move recognises that compulsory competitive tendering, ushered in by the Local Authorities Bill, has placed former in-house departments on an even footing with private sector consultants.

ACE aims to boost total membership from 650 and pre-empt the formation of a rival professional organisation. Chief executive Nicholas Bennett wants to make the ACE the voice of the profession with the weight to set standards of practice.
