In view of the letters in the last two issues of NCE, can I point out that it is not ACE's policy to lobby for the return of scale fees. As NCE noted in the issue of 24 January, scale fees are contrary to both UK and EU law.
While ACE makes no apology for campaigning for consultants to be adequately rewarded for the work that they undertake, we believe that the most effective method of raising fees is by consultants demonstrating value and excellence and promoting to clients the benefits of such a value-driven approach.
Increasingly, best practice clients understand that 'lowest price' is rarely the best option when procuring engineering consultancy services. ACE will continue to promote value over lowest price - a key Egan principle let's not forget - as the best route to successful projects.
