Abu Dhabi commits £46bn to public transport projects

The Abu Dhabi government plans to spend $68bn (£46bn) on public transport projects in the next five years, according to an official report.

A public transit network, including high speed rail and rapid transit options such as trams and buses, will be implemented to lessen city congestion and reduce dependence on motor vehicles.

The planned projects include the £4.7bn metro system, construction of which is scheduled to commence in 2011. The first segement of the 131km long project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, with the whole project due for completion in 2016.
