£445M M74 completion project awarded to Interlink M74 joint venture

The £445M M74 completion project was awarded to Interlink M74 Joint Venture, which comprises Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, Morgan Est, Morrison Construction and Sir Robert McAlpine, yesterday.

The joint venture will be responsible for the design and construction of an 8-kilometre extension to the M74 which will significantly reduce congestion on the busiest stretch of the M8 through Glasgow.

"We are delighted to be responsible for delivering this project which is the largest ever road construction scheme to be awarded in Scotland," said Interlink M74 Joint Venture Project Director, David Welsh.

"We have worked closely with our client during the tendering process and we will continue to develop strong relationships with them to ensure the project is successfully completed. Our design teams are already progressing the detailed design in readiness for construction work starting on site in May 2008."

The project, being funded by Transport Scotland with contributions from Glasgow City, South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire councils, includes the construction of motorway-standard dual 3-lane carriageways with hard shoulders, through brownfield sites with significant road, rail and river crossings.

It involves the construction of 12 significant bridges, including a 12-span 700-metre long steel composite launched bridge across the West Coast Main Line – the UK's busiest railway line. Also included in the project is major brownfield site remediation, ground improvements, large diameter piling and the provision of intelligent transport systems - all in a constrained urban site.

"This Government is committed to completing the M74 and I am delighted to see the tendering process reach its conclusion with the award of this contract," said Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson.

"This extension will complete an important link in Scotland's motorway network and reduce congestion on the busy M8 through Glasgow, providing links to regeneration projects in the city’s east end and bringing much-needed new investment to help capture long term benefits from the Commonwealth Games in 2014."

Work will start on the project in early May, with construction expected to last three years. The project is expected to provide a major economic boost to the west of Scotland.
