43 flood warnings as poor weather closes in

The Environment Agency is braced for floods as poor weather batters the country today, and the rest of the week.

The Environment Agency has posted 43 flood warnings, and put another 137 areas on flood watch as torrential rail coming in from the south.

Demountable barriers have been installed at:

Upton on the Severn, where galvanised steel A-frames, covered with aluminium panels, covered with an impermeable lining.

At Frankwell in Shrewsbury, two levels of barrier are available, but only the first has been set up for this flood warning. The £6M project was completed in 2003, to protect 74 homes from a 1 in 100 year flood.

Finally, Swedish pallet barriers have been set-up at Hilton Road in Worcester. A PVC membrane sits on a steel pallet, supporting a metal A-frame.

The Agency expects severe weather today, with some respite tomorrow, and then a second deluge on Thursday.
