£33.5M excavation support supplied

Groundforce Shorco has supplied excavation support for a £33.5M, 22-storey apartment development in Manchester.

The £60,000, 16-week contract was for a 96m by 18m and 8m deep excavation next to Manchester International Conference Centre for main contractor Carillion.

The basement excavation is formed by 388 contiguous piles. To create a clear working space within the basement area, raking struts had to be avoided, so hydraulic struts were placed horizontally across the excavation with spans of 7.6-18.3m. Because of large waling loads and long spans, high-capacity MP125 (125t) hydraulic struts were used.

The overall scheme is due to finish by September 2006.
