Important milestones are coming up for Millennium Point, an interactive science complex close to Birmingham city centre. Three tenderers - Laing, Shepherd and Galliford/Christiani & Nielsen - will put in their bids next month for the 116M design and construct project. The winner is to be announced in March with work starting on site in April for opening at the end of September 2001. Meanwhile, the architectural designs by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners will be unveiled at the end of this month.
The scheme has long since exceeded its private sponsorship target of 6M and now stands at 7M. The Millennium Commission has allocated up to 50M in grant money, English Partnerships has recently confirmed funding of 5.9M, added to 23.6M from the European Regional Development Fund. Further sponsorship comes from local government and universities.
Consultants already at work are Mace (project manager), Buro Happold (structural engineer), Ove Arup (building services) and Bucknall Austin (quantity surveying). Tilbury Douglas is carrying out site clearance work.
