£2M for Northampton marina

Final funding has been secured for a £2M marina planned for Northampton.

Northamptonshire County Council has awarded the Beckets Park Partnership £204,845 up to March 2011.

The marina is intended to create a regional centre for the boating community, and link the Grand Union Canal to the west with the fens network in the east.

It will provide moorings for more than 80 boats, giving boaters a place to stop off near the city centre.

Beckets Park Partnership member Trini Crake said: “For too long the River Nene has been a fantastic natural asset that the town seemed to have forgotten. The marina will be something everyone can enjoy, bringing visitors to the town and creating opportunities.”

Both West Northamptonshire Development Corporation and the Environment Agency have also provided cash, and the project is supported by Northampton Borough Council and River Nene Regional Park.

Work on phase one of the project will begin in January 2010, and it should be finished in March 2011.
