Beijing police detained 10 people this week in connection with the collapse of an underground railway tunnel being built for next year's Olympic Games. The Beijing Times accused a state-owned contractor of attempting to cover up the collapse and said that rather than call emergency services it carried out its own eighthour rescue attempt to free six workers trapped beneath 11m of concrete and earth.
All six are now believed dead.
Managers are reported to have conscated the mobile phones of workers and told them not to speak to the media or the police.
Beijing police only learned of the incident after a worker managed to contact police in his home town who relayed the information back to Beijing. The supervisor and designer are said to be among the 10 detained.
