Rescue workers searching for survivors of the Oso landslide in Washington state, US have said that 176 people are missing following the incident at the weekend and the death toll so far has been confirmed as 14.
A state of emergency has been declared in Washington state by US president Barack Obama. Washington governor Jay Inslee viewed the landslide from the air yesterday and said that the area was “devastated byond imagination”.
The landslide is a reactivation of a glacial deposits landslide complex known as the Hazel Landslide that was previously active in 1988 and 2006.
The landslide debris of the most recent activity is reported to be up to 12m deep and to cover an area of more than 2.5km2.
