The construction industry is failing to fully benefit from monitoring data by not integrating the information in Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems, according to Raul Fuentes speaking at GE’s Instrumentation and Monitoring conference today.
UCL lecturer Fuentes said that it doesn’t make sense for the in-depth data produced by today’s instrumentation and monitoring systems not to be more integrated within the delivery of the overall project.
“We are capable of producing complex 3D models in BIM and information from instrumentation could be displayed graphically to help widen understanding of what the monitoring data shows,” he said.
Also at the conference, Geotechnical Observations managing director Andrew Ridley outlined the progress being made on the development of Eurocodes for instrumentation and called for more industry input to shape the standards. “The general rules section has been through a consultation process and are set to be adopted but we are still working on another 10 application specific chapters,” he said.
